The Crafts We’re Taking With Us All Summer

OFF THE CLOCK: Happy Friday! It’s almost the weekend, so let’s NOT talk about work, okay?

I like to have a handful of crafty things on hand (and in our vacation bags) throughout the summer when the kids are home. When we run into a rainy day, get too hot and just want to stay inside, or when the boys are out fishing and Charlotte wants to stay home…these are the five things making the cut this summer.

1. Paint markers + rocks

I can't get enough of these paint markers. The colors are rich, beautiful, and completely opaque, even on rough surfaces like rocks.

Throw them in your camping tote or vacation bag and you've got a whole afternoon planned. The kids collect rocks, color them, then hide them for someone else to find. Three wins in one activity.

2. Alcohol markers + simple coloring books

If you haven't jumped on the alcohol marker bandwagon yet, now's the time. They color so much smoother than regular markers with way fewer streaks, and all the different shades make even simple coloring pages look so much better.

We're pairing ours with coloring books that don't require an hour to finish one page. I'm also a big fan of Rad + Happy's monthly coloring pages. She even makes iPad versions.

3. Mini clay kits

These little clay kits are tucked away in my vacation craft bag for next week. The kids have been begging me to let them open them early, but I'm holding out. Half the fun is the suspense, right?

4. Clay bead bracelet kits

These have been a staple at our house for the last two summers. Charlotte keeps coming back to them and making bracelets for, well, everyone.

5. Lay-flat sticker by number books

I know you've probably seen sticker by number books before, but have you tried the lay-flat version? It's such a small thing, but not having to wrestle the book open while you're placing tiny stickers makes the whole experience so much more enjoyable.

Honorable mention: I finally caved and ordered a bedazzle kit after Charlotte begged for one approximately 700 times. Jury's still out, but I'll report back.

Happy crafting, friends!
